Philippine elite troops backed by helicopter gunships fought Al-Qaeda-linked militants Thursday in the group's stronghold on a southern island, in clashes that killed 10 government soldiers, the military said. The soldiers battled Islamic extremists from the Abu Sayyaf group on the troubled island of Basilan, with the fighting leaving at least 10 soldiers and 9 militants dead. The Sandiganbayan will not order the re-arrest of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo pending resolution of a motion for reconsideration on the plunder case filed by the Office of the Ombudsman. In a 6-page resolution issued Friday, the anti-graft court noted that many of the accused in the plunder case filed by the Ombudsman have either just received or have yet to receive the review joint resolution finding probable cause to file the complaint. Home-grown clothing line giant Bench is celebrating its 25 years in retail with a line-up of short films starring big-name endorsers. The films, which span genres -- musical, action, documentary -- had its premiere night at the Center Stage in SM Mall of Asia on Friday. Taiwan on Friday expressed anger after Olympics organisers said the island's national flag had been taken down from a London display at the request of the Chinese embassy.
